Steve Stepp’s decorated boat racing career was only the beginning. He is one of the true pioneers of high-performance hull design.
His career began in offshore racing in the 1960s, where he set 14 world speed records and earned 8 world championships. Along the way, he introduced innovations that changed boating forever – most notably the pad-bottom hull and the notched double Stepp transom, both now fundamental to performance boat design and still at the core of TripleTail hulls today.
These designs allowed boats to plane faster, run quicker on top, and turn with greater precision. Their impact speaks for itself, as nearly every major performance offshore builder now relies on some evolution of Stepp’s original work.
Offshore racing is the ultimate proving ground—where speed, control, and durability are tested without compromise. That same discipline led to HydraStepp and ultimately to TripleTail Boatworks, blending proven racing DNA with refined craftsmanship for a truly elevated fishing experience.
